Scottsdale Photo Enforcement Program
The Scottsdale photo enforcement program has operated since 1996. Cameras capture red light and speed violations at multiple locations throughout the city. The Photo Enforcement Unit can be reached at 480-312-7014.
If you receive a photo ticket, review it carefully. The notice shows photos of the violation, the date and time, the location, and the vehicle. You can view your photos and violation information online before deciding how to respond.
Red light violations carry serious consequences. Persons found responsible or entering a plea of responsible for red light violations will be ordered by MVD to attend and successfully complete Traffic Survival School. This is mandatory and separate from defensive driving school.
Responding to Photo Tickets
Photo enforcement tickets follow Arizona law requirements. If you receive an initial notice in the mail, you do not have to respond unless you are formally served in person. The city has deadlines for filing and serving citations.
If you are served, you must respond by your court date. Options include paying the fine, requesting a hearing, or attending defensive driving school if eligible. Ignoring a served citation leads to default judgment, added fees, and points on your license.
Note: Traffic Survival School for red light violations is different from defensive driving. MVD orders it separately after conviction.
Defensive Driving School Option
Arizona allows most drivers to take a defensive driving class to dismiss traffic tickets. You must request this option before paying or appearing in court. Contact Scottsdale City Court to get approval. The court will set a deadline for completing the course and submitting your certificate. This is separate from Traffic Survival School, which MVD orders for specific violations.
You cannot use defensive driving school if you completed one for another violation in the past 12 months. CDL holders cannot use this option for tickets received while driving commercial vehicles. Completing the class keeps points off your record and prevents insurance increases.
